Welcome!

 

The Salem High School Sundevil Bands is a 7-time VBODA Honor Band and 4-time VMEA Blue Ribbon school. Ensembles consist of Wind Ensemble, Marching Sundevils, and the Swingin' Sundevils.

​

Student membership allows any student from Salem High School and the Visual & Performing Arts Academy.

What do we do?

 

The Salem Wind Ensemble performs multiple concerts through the academic school year and auditions for district/regional/state level honor groups.

 

The Marching Sundevils represents Salem High School at many community events and competitions. We perform at all home football games, local parades, and compete against other bands of comparable size.

Welcome to our new Director of Bands
Mr. Robert Rigby

Mr. Rigby is a product of Virginia Beach Public Schools, having graduated from Kellam High School, then attended Old Dominion University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in 2017. While he attended ODU, he studied under Dennis Zeisler and participated in numerous ensembles, including Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Clarinet Choir, Jazz Orchestra, and Marching Band. He was selected as the Principal Bass Clarinet for the 2017 National Intercollegiate Band, has played for Tidewater Winds, Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble, Winds of the Blue Ridge, and is a current member of the Virginia Wind Symphony.

 

     Mr. Rigby began his teaching career at William Fleming High School in Roanoke, Virginia, working as the Beginning Guitar/Music Production Teacher and was Assistant Band Director for the Marching Colonels. The Music Production Program received a Save The Music Grant which boosted the program to National Status, having collaborated with music producers like Ross Copperman, F. Reid Shippen, Nicole Galyon, and produced talent currently working in the industry. He was named 2022 Teacher of the Year during his time at William Fleming High School.

 

Mr. Rigby is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, Virginia Education Association, National Association for Music Educators, Virginia Music Educators Association, and Technology in Music Education.
